Prayers & the Power of God
Publish On Mar 27, 2009 5:33 pm |
This is the story about how the prayers of many people and the power of God got me through some very tough times. My name is Brett Veit and I am a 32 year old man with a wife and two small children. In August 2005, after months of poor health and many visits to various doctors, I received the shocking news that my heart had given out and I would need a heart transplant. There just aren't any words to tell you what it felt like to hear this kind of news. By the time, the doctors figured out that my heart was failing, my kidney and liver were also failing and I came very close to death.
It was no coincidence that Pastor William happened to be in Fort Wayne, staying at the home of my parents, when all of this happened. This was Pastor William's second visit to Fort Wayne and the second time I'd met him. It was the first week of August, 2005. Pastor William came to see me in the hospital and asked me if I'd like him to pray. Since I was on oxygen, I could not talk, but nodded my head. In Pastor William's words, this is what happened: "I asked Jesus what He wanted me to say to Brother Brett Veit. He told me to ask Brett to believe it is I who designed his heart and instructed it how to function. Tell Brett that if he will believe that I am the Lord who is able to heal him, I will do it! I repeated what God had said to me to Brett and asked him if he believed it. He nodded his head to indicate that he DID believe it. Then I began to pray.
As I was praying, I saw the hands of Jesus holding Brett's shoulders. As I left that day, I told Brett I would see him in May 2006". I was raised in a Christian home, so although I'd never faced anything of this magnitude in my life before, it was not difficult for me to answer "Yes" to William's questions. There is truly no way to describe what it was like for me when Pastor William began to pray. The peace that came over me at that moment is the most perfect, pure feeling I have ever had in my life.
I KNEW I was going to be okay that I would get through this thing. I knew it in my soul. It became very clear to me that God has a plan for my life and this was a part of it. Was it fun? No, it definitely was not, but I believe it was necessary. I received my new heart on February 14, 2006 yes, that's right on Valentines' Day. I had waited for six months and there were some setbacks and some times when my faith was tested, but, deep down, I knew that God had me in the palm of his hand and would get me through it all. When I look back, it is very interesting how God was working this whole thing out before I ever knew it was going to happen.
God always has a plan for us even though we can't always see it. I'd been working at Disney World in Orlando, Florida for a number of years. My wife and I loved it there and I loved my job at Animal Kingdom. I really hadn't thought a great deal about moving back home to Indiana. When I was home on a visit, however, I decided to just see what kind of jobs were available in Fort Wayne. Amazingly, there was a job in my field at the Coliseum in Fort Wayne. I applied for the job and got it the first job I applied for! Even though we'd had no plans to move, it seemed that God wanted us to be back in Indiana.
When I got sick, my cardiologist just happened to have been a former student of one of the best transplant cardiologists in the country which was probably the only reason I was able to get in to see her. She, in turn, knew the surgeon from Riley Children's Hospital who would do the transplant also one of the top transplant surgeons in the country. A clerical error allowed me to get full pay on my short-term disability the entire time I waited for my new heart.. My wife was able to pick up a second health insurance policy through her job AFTER I knew about my need for a transplant. When it looked as though all my sick time and short-term disability would run out a couple weeks before I was able to return to work, the people I work with petitioned the County Council to set up a sick bank for me which would allow people to donate days for me. Again, I was able to receive my full salary throughout the waiting period, the transplant and my recovery. I have had no problem with infection or rejection. I have now been back to work full-time for two months. I am truly in awe of the way God knows what our needs are and what is going on in our lives WAY before we do.
I know that, through faith in God, all things are possible and that God is with us each and every moment of our lives. He loves us and wants to help us through all the times in our lives. We just need to trust Him and He will take care of us. Yes, I did have to learn this in a difficult and dramatic way, but I have found out it is true.
Just as William said, he returned in May 2006 and saw me with my completely new heart. I now understand that if anyone believes the Word of God, he can receive life even from death. God's word can bring new life and blessings to all who believe Jesus. If you would like Pastor William to pray for you, E-mail him at or call me at 260-436-7357.
Your Brother in the Lord,
Brett Veit
